In Memoriam: Alexander Arutiunian (1920-2012)

Alexander Arutiunian, best known to trumpeters for his Concerto for Trumpet written in 1950, passed away on March 28, 2012.

In 1948, the Armenian composer Arutiunian won the Stalin Prize for his cantata Motherland, beating Dmitri Shostakovich to the award. He also was named a People’s Artist of the USSR in 1970, received the Armenian SSR honorary title in 1964, the Aram Khachaturian Prize in 1986, and most recently the St. Sakah and St. Mesrop Order by Holy Etchmiadzin in 2004. Arutiunian’s most recent work was a flute concerto written last year.
